So, what's been running through my head as I approach this new school year? Well, the first thing I have to overcome is the night before the first day of school. Thus (and with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore), I submit my efforts at sharing my reality -- tinged with humor.
However, you already know that I give homework... and this is your task. After you have read the poem, YOU finish the last line!
(If any of you are so inclined to add a verse or two, I would be delighted!)
My best wishes for a school year that fulfills most of your dreams... always leave room for serendipity!
And... here it comes:
‘Twas the night before school
and all through the house
the cats were all sleeping
and so was my spouse.
Full of goodies for the kids and lesson plans galore.
And I, in my pj’s, remained wide awake
Tossing and turning and awaiting my fate.
You’d think I could sleep, after all, I’m a pro
It’s my 39th year of teaching, you’d think… but no
I still like awake on the night before school
Worrying if my students will think I’m not cool.
Hundreds of thoughts just run wild through my head
Teach students, plan, do paperwork for Special Ed
Collaborate, support, prepare and decide
Oh me, oh my, perhaps I should hide?
The computer era is here, I must keep abreast
My students know more than I do; I must try my best
Technology changes so fast I try to keep current
Just as I think I got it – oops, there it went!
I’ll have meetings on this, and meetings on that
I bought a new PDA to know who’s at bat
There is so much to do, my head just might burst
Let me check my PDA to see what is first.
Nevertheless, I still love what I do.
I hope that you will always love it, too.
Remember to laugh and remember to smile
