Every morning my to-do list read something like this: lose weight, make colonoscopy appointment, fix up my new house, forgive the ex, and get a job using my degree (which, by the way, I earned about 25 years ago). I wonder why it took me almost two years to get around to getting a job? I did get that colonoscopy, though!
One rare Sunday, when my schedule was completely clear, I read the entire Sunday paper. I even made it to the “help wanted” section. There it was: my job. The job was actually at my daughter’s school. They needed vocational training instructors for their job sites. I had thought about applying there before, but somehow it never made it on my to-do list. The ad said to fax a resume to the principal. RESUME…oh I remember that dusty old thing. I spent the rest of my “relaxing” Sunday updating my resume and putting in on the computer.
On Monday I decided to call the principal and show some initiative — I wanted to work at this school! Our conversation was professional and yet friendly. I got an interview with the job coach coordinator for a couple days later. I was excited to actually be at the interview stage. The interview went great, I was qualified for the job, and I felt I had a good rapport with the job coach coordinator. The more we talked, the more excited I became. I was told that I would be called for a second interview.
The second time around it was two of us new guys and one experienced job coach. It was more of a training session than an interview and I soon got the idea — we were hired! We were told our assignments; I was to be the new in-house vocational training instructor and my students and I would be doing all the school custodial work . . . if I wanted the job. Want it? You better believe it!
One day after just getting my new job, I was surfing the internet and wondering, where do I start? Do I talk to the person who had the job last year who is still in the system? I think I need to ask a lot of questions. I think I need to read some of the latest special education teaching literature. I think I need to find out just exactly what my students are capable of doing. I think I need a new wardrobe. I think I need to organize my house because I am going back to work.
I think I need to enter CEC’s blogger contest! And that is what brings me here.
