Great post, I think the two most important factors in gettng somebody, especially a stubborn youngster, to participate is to sell the benefits from their point of view (as you say in your post) but in a way whereby the student feels like it was his/her decision rather than being influence by you, as the teacher.

Tough skill to master, though - I'm going through a stage like this with my child and it's really difficult to see the eyes through his world when trying to "pitch" something!
