I teach Special education in a co taught math class and my students really like to do the hands on types of things that you are talking about. One thing that may sound corny but I know works is the use of songs and dancing if you are up for that type of thing. You can find them on teacher tube or you tube. If you want to practice them or just show them to the students. I have students who only remember there times tables or formulas because of the crazy songs. Hope that helps.
