Richard:
I found your post truly refreshing. As an Afrocentric resident teacher, I continue to explain to my African-American male students that the world will not be so friendly as school are when they become adults. I continue to tell them that much of what they are getting now in terms of multiple chances is only happening because they are minors, but that will gradually fade as they approached adulthood. Holler if you hear me-as the late Tupac Shakur used to say. I also continue to tell them to read because it will open doors that are closed to them because they lack knowledge and skills. So I appreciate what you are trying to teach. It may not be PC, but it is the reality of what many students will be up against.

I truly loved reading your blog post. I, too, work in special education. My students are 2nd and 3rd graders with learning disabilities, autism, speech impairments, and other various disabilities. Just last month I finished my first year of teaching. It was a year of learning for me as well as my students. As do you, I hope to go from good to great in my next year of teaching. I have spent the beginning of my summer reflecting on the past year and looking at new ideas and strategies I can bring into the classroom. I hope to engage my students in more self-discovery activities as well. You wrote it best when you stated “If I walk them through everything, they won’t learn how to learn on their own; they won’t learn to question or search.”

Check out Montessori, particularly Children Who Are Not Yet Peaceful and Science Behind the Genius - you will love them and they will help you get away from extrinsic motivators. it is possible!
