So, for next year (yes, I’m already thinking about next year!) I think we are ready to take my program another step in the right direction – off campus! In a perfect world and according to best practices, an adult transition program like mine should truly be community based -- not stuck on a high school campus.
Now there are lots of different ways that might look. I’ve heard of programs that operate out of an apartment - how cool would that be?! Some operate out of various public facilities (libraries, churches, etc). Still others that simply use school district property that is just separate from a typical student campus. Or even partnerships with local community colleges to use parts of their campuses.
However, there are complications and logistics to figure out.
- How do you handle crisis situations that might require a nurse or a discipline administrator?
- What transportation options do you provide?
- What meal options do students have if there’s no cafeteria? How does that work with free and reduced lunch programs?
I’m sure there are others that I can’t think of at the moment. All in all, I’m really excited to see what next year holds - lots of obstacles to overcome and adventures to undertake. I can’t wait!
Where are adult transition programs that you are aware of operating from? Some place other than a high school? How have they addressed some of those complications and logistics? Do you have any other genius ideas for us to consider?
